As a Minneapolis senior photographer, one of the questions I hear most is some version of "What should I wear for my senior pictures?" It makes sense. Outfit choices affect everything from how confident you feel in front of the camera to whether your gallery truly feels like you. Magi wanted that golden hour open meadow look for her senior pictures, and the outfit she chose matched the vibe perfectly.

If there is one outfit I would recommend to almost every senior, it is a flowy maxi dress. Not because it is the obvious choice, but because of what it does in front of the camera. For Magi's senior pictures, she wanted a golden hour open meadow look and the soft floral colors and flowy silhouette of the dress matched that romantic vibe perfectly. (Can you believe this was taken in the middle of Minneapolis?)

And that movement is everything. When Magi's skirt caught the breeze as she spun, walked, or simply lifted the hem, the fabric created something a fitted dress never can. She could also easily sit down in the dress for different perspectives. It gave us real variety within a single outfit, images that feel alive rather than posed, and moments that are genuinely hard to recreate in anything else.

What should you look for in a maxi dress? Something with a fitted or smocked bodice so it stays structured at the top, a skirt with enough volume to move, and a color or print that feels like you and coordinates with the location vibe you want. Fabrics like chiffon, cotton voile, and tiered cotton all catch movement well.

What to Wear for Senior Pictures: Elevated Casual

Yes, you can absolutely wear a casual outfit in your senior pictures. Kenzie did it just right for her Minneapolis senior picture session.

Kenzie's elevated casual outfit is one of my favorites from last season. Why? It's casual—I mean it's a sweater and jeans—but it's the sweater she picked out that makes all the difference. It's the texture. The subtle pattern. The tones that coordinate with her skin tone and eye color (something I always look for when helping clients choose a top during their Consultation).

What should you look for in an elevated casual outfit? Skip the plain, boxy t-shirt and reach for something with texture, an interesting neckline, a subtle pattern, or a detail that makes a small statement.

What to Wear for Senior Pictures: The White Dress

The white dress is one of the most popular outfits to wear for senior pictures in and around Minneapolis. I love the details on the white dress Isabella chose.

By far the most popular outfit for girls senior pictures is a white dress, whether they are a senior in Minneapolis or in a suburb like Rosemount or Lakeville. Isabella's dress is listed as one of my favorites though because it's not just plain white. The eyelet flower detailing gives it texture, which adds depth and dimension on camera. The skirt has enough movement that we could play with it a bit. And the length was just right. Not so short that it limited what we could do, not so long that it changed the vibe of a short dress.

What to Wear for Senior Pictures: The Statement Dress

A pop of color can help your senior pictures stand out. Melissa's choice added that extra something to her Luxe Album which featured her images from her St Paul senior picture session.

Melissa's bright, vibrant pink dress was the perfect choice for her senior session at Como Park. Against the lush greens of the Como Conservatory garden, the color just popped. It made her dark hair and eyes come alive and brought an energy to her gallery that is hard to look away from.

That is what a statement dress does. It does not have to be a bold color either. A dress with a striking pattern, an unexpected silhouette, or something that feels very right now can do the same thing. It is simply the outfit that feels like a little more you, a little more now, and a little more memorable.

Location matters just as much as the dress itself. Melissa's pink against that garden backdrop was not an accident. What to Wear for Senior Pictures: Jeans and the Right Top

Kayla's look from her Minneapolis senior session is one of my favorites. Her emerald green peplum top is a perfect example of how the right top can elevate a simple pair of jeans.

Kayla's emerald green peplum top is everything I love in a senior picture outfit. The cut worked beautifully for her and the color complemented her skin tone and curly dark hair perfectly. And then there are the details. The statement sleeves that add personality without overpowering the look, and that little tie in the back that made her back shots just as striking as the front.

When you are shopping for a fashion top, you might find something that is everywhere in stores right now and feels very right on the hanger. But if you put it on and it does not feel like you, put it back. The best senior picture outfits are the ones you reach for because they make you feel good, not because they are everywhere right now.

That said, I love when seniors include one outfit that feels very of the moment. Even if it dates the images a little, it captures exactly who you were at seventeen and that's part of what makes senior pictures meaningful.
