Why Moms Hesitate to Book Family Photos (and What I Want You to Know)

Earlier this month, I shared why I’m offering family mini sessions again for the first time in years. (If you missed it, you can read that post here.) That blog was a little more personal—about loss, change, and realizing how much I cherish the images I have of my own family.
But today, I want to talk to the moms who are still thinking about family pictures but haven’t hit “book” yet. Not because you don’t want them… but because, honestly, there’s a lot that gets in the way.
Over the years (and in plenty of conversations with friends, clients, and even myself), I’ve heard so many reasons we hesitate. None of them are silly. In fact, they’re incredibly real:

“I don’t even know what we’d wear.”
Yep. That alone can feel like a huge hurdle. You’re already managing so much, and figuring out outfits for your whole crew? It’s a lot. But here’s the truth: these don’t need to be styled to perfection. Choose what feels good. Stick to colors that coordinate, not match. Layers and textures photograph beautifully. And if you’re stuck—text me. I’m happy to help.

“I want to feel better before I’m in front of the camera.”
Whether it’s energy, confidence, or just a season where you don’t quite feel like yourself—I see you. And I get it. But I want to say this gently: your family wants you in the photos. Not a version of you a few months from now. Not “after the next thing.” Just… you. The one who shows up every day, who holds it all together. These photos aren’t about flawlessness. They’re about connection and memories.
“No one in my family actually enjoys doing photos.”
This one makes me smile because—yep. Most dads and kids don’t wake up thinking, “You know what sounds fun? Coordinated outfits and smiling at a camera.” That’s why I keep my mini sessions short (just 20 minutes!) and relaxed. We move fast, we laugh, and it’s over before anyone has time to complain. Every time I have offered family mini sessions, I hear the same thing: “That wasn’t bad at all.” (And from husbands? That’s basically a glowing review.)
So if you’ve been waiting for everything to fall into place before booking family photos… you’re not alone.
But here’s a little nudge from someone who’s been there—sometimes the best memories are made in the middle of the chaos. Not when life slows down (because does it ever?), but when we make time for the moments that matter.

Fall Family Mini Session dates are being announced Monday. They’ll be quick, simple, and heartfelt. And the number of spots is limited.
Want to be the first to see dates, locations, and times before they go public? Send an email to tracy@tracycaffreyphotography.com with the subject line “2025 Family Minis” and I’ll make sure you’re the first to know.
You don’t have to have it all figured out. You just have to show up.
And I promise—I’ll take it from there.
